Blondie Eyeshadow
From NARS Cosmetics

Taupe

high quality color and staying power The colors of Nars eyeshadows contain more pigments than most, which accounts for some of the cost. These shadows always look a little different on than they look in the container; for one thing, many of the "wilder" colors go on sheer and more wearable than you'd expect for, say, orange, yellow, lime green or cobalt. I have very fair skin with a reddish undertone, and I have found I can wear many more of the fun colors than I could in any other line--they're subtle but still give a punch of color. I've used plenty of brands both high and low-end. I love the "Night" line for eyeliner--applied with a push brush or angle brush. They all include a color with black, which makes them dark enough to help my eyes stand out. Night Fever makes my light green/blue eyes look amazing. As others have mentioned, the color stays on a long time. If you have never tried Nars, you really should go to a Nars counter and try some of them on. The colors look lighter and less rich in the photos. If you want to buy online, I would first check the colors on the Nars Cosmetics website --they have photos with much truer color swatches--you can roll over the color choices and see them. Lovely I can not get enough of Nars eyeshadow. The colors are blendable and you can layer them to be as sheer or as bold as possible. My favorite is Santorini, it works well as an accent color or as the main focus of my eyes. You can ever use these as cake liners by wetting a liner brush, although as far as shadow goes application with the fingers seems to be the best approach. The prices are a bit steep but I've had mine for a year and haven't had to buy more yet, as opposed to drugstore shadows that need constant retouching. Great Silky feel and awesome color I really like the eyeshadow from this make-up line if only it was not so pricey. It is versatile, silky, and has staying power. The eyeshadow also has a different effect depending on your eye color and skin tone. If you are willing to pay the price, give this make-up line a try. My favorite colors are Strada and New York.

AVON BASICS Care Deeply with Aloe Lip Balm
From Avon

Give whisper-soft kisses. Smoothing balm pampers lips with moisture and aloe. .15 oz. net wt....
Amazon Sales Rank: #679 in Beauty Brand: Avon

Best Lip Balm Ever This lip balm keeps my lips feeling silky and moist and not waxy or heavy. It has a pleasant sent that does not offend the nose (you almost cannot smell it). I have tried many lip balms, and I keep returning to this one. However, if you do not like any of the ingredients below, try another lip balm. Ingredients: petrolatum, polydecene, caprylic/capric triglyceride, parafin, isopropyl lanolate, ozokerite, octyl methoxycinnamate, synthetic wax, aloe barbadensis extract, benzoic acid, fragrance, BHT Awesome product! I've used this product for decades and wouldn't change to another for anything. It keeps my lips conditioned, prevents cold sores (for me anyway). I even use it on the sides of my nose when my nose gets a little raw from a cold or allergies and it works great, not greasy or smelly and keeps it from chapping and peeling. My husband even uses it and it keeps his lips from chapping or drying out in zero degree weather and wind. I highly recommend it to anyone. I don't leave home without it. Best lip balms on the market This is by far the best lip balm on the market. I absolutely love this product, and good thing as I have tons of these, I keep one nearly everywhere in my house. Honestly I have a pile of these on my computer desk, and if anyone needs a lip balm, this is the one they leave my house with. I am in fact an Avon Lady, but even before I joined, I adored this product. I keep wondering, how it is that I've spent so much more on balms, to have them come not even close to this one. It does not feel wax heavy on my lips, and doesn't strip the skin on my lips, just keeps them supremely moisturized and silky smooth. I will never waste my money on anything else.

Sephora Brand Nail Whitening Pencil
From Sephora Brand

Don't bother I really wanted this to work, because I can't wear nail polish at my job. Wow, was I ever disappointed. Not only were the results very slight and hard to distinguish, but the white, which I have come to believe is just watercolor paint, gets all over your fingertips, and then the entire effect washes off with water! So you go about all day without washing your hands and have white marks on your fingertips. if you want to see the effect without buying this product, you could buy a box of Crayola watercolor pencils, then you'd get the same effect for less money with many different colors to choose from. YEAH!! I love this! I always use to give myself french manicures, but I could never get them to look natural enough. Now there is this pencil! All you do is run it underneath your nails and... BOOM! You've got a great and natural looking french manicure. (or if you want to be boring you can say it makes the whites of your nails look whiter.) I highly recommend this product. :) French manicure in under 5 minutes The Sephora Nail Whitening Pencil is a miracle for a woman on the go. You simply run it along the underside of your nail, and it appears from a distance that you have a french manicure! There is no drying necessary, and it is impossible to make a mistake. This pencil provides an inexpensive and convenient way to look polished... without the polish!

Benefit Cosmetics Eye Bright

What it is:A pink perk-me-up stick to brighten the eyes. What it does:Benefit Eye Bright has a pop of pink that brightens your eyes and your spirits instantaneously. What else you need to know:It's like a nap in a stick-keep it handy for afternoon touch-ups.

MAGNIFICENT I found this absolutely wonderful product while searching for a decent eye cream. I ordered and am "so" happy with "EYECON" by Benefit. Another consumer suggested trying Eye Bright along with Eyecon & the results are amazing. I have "very" fair skin. Not only does Eyebright completely cover the dark spots under my eyes from age & sleep deprivation :O but it lasts "all day" and is so light that you don't even know it's there! I abhor under-eye concealers as they put emphasis on the growing lines under and around my eyes. This product is a must-have and a keeper. Benefit has erased years off my eyes and I'm thrilled :) Good Bye Allergy Eyes I have never been a fan of makeup or heavily made up looks, but I discovered Benetint about 6 year. Since then I have been a huge fan of Benefit cosmetics. My makeup regime usually includes a little cover up to cover dark circles, my benetint and maybe some eyeliner if I'm feeling fancy. A year ago I visited the Benefit counter at a local department store the makeup girl recommended Eye Bright to me because of the dark circles under my eyes caused by allergies. At first I was resistant to the idea being as I have previously stated not a huge fan of makeup, but I let her put it on. After looking in the mirror I was sold! My eyes looked bigger and brighter. I hadn't realized how much older and tired the dark circles had made me look until I saw myself with Eye Bright. This is a definite reccomend Very Satisfied! After reading the other reviews (and noting that most were written by people with light or pale skin), I had to write to let others know that I have olive skin tones and I love this product! I have always fought dark undereye circles. I saw this product while searching the web about the makeup artisit, Carmindy (who recommends using this), and decided to look into it. I just recently bought the Eye Bright and absolutely love it. You do have to blend, but it comes across very natural without looking too light. I recommend this product highly. I never write reviews, but I had to let those interested know that it really does work, AND it works on darker skin tones too, like mine.

DuWop Twilight Venom

What it is:A shimmering, crimson lip stain suspended in a venom-laced liquid lip conditioner. What it does: Twilight Venom should be shaken before use (to represent the blending of the human and vampire worlds) and can be applied repeatedly until desired intensity of color has been reached and lips are plumped and revitalized. Its formula contains argan, avocado, and olive oils as well as vitamin E.What else you need to know:With a customizable ruby stain that captures the blood red lips sported by fashionable vampires, Twilight Venom can let you play the part!

twilight lip venom I absolutely LOVE this product. I'm a big fan of all the DuWop lip products I have tried. but this has quickly become my favorite cosmetic. I like lip stains and I also like lip plumpers, so it's great that the 2 were put together. It gives a beautiful red "just got done making out for hours" shade. there is not much shine, so it doesn't look overdone and glossy, which I think is a good thing but if you are looking for gloss you will be disappointed. the plumping isn't extreme. it gives some fullness but with out the burning. for those of you that have used too faced cosmetic's lip injection and felt like your lips were going to fall off..but you endure it because you want the fullness, TRY THIS PRODUCT! it gives the same fullness WITHOUT the pain. the only downside is that you don't get much in the tube. (0.1 Fl. oz) i's say its about 2 inches tall (including the handle to the applicator) and 1/4 in in width. hope this helps. let me know if there is anything else you would like to know about this product.

Almay One Coat Triple Effect Mascara 1 ea
From Revlon

New! Triple Effect™ 3 looks in one coat for 100% pure impact - Fuller, Longer, Curvi

Clumpy This mascara is very thick and causes my lashes to stick together in big clumps. The result is a theatrical "I am crazy" look - not exactly what I am going for. Aweful mascara. I love Almay because I have sensitive eyes. I tried this mascara for a change. It was aweful. It is messy and cakey. It doesn't do what they say it will do. I have flakes on my cheek from it coming off my lashes.

Amazon Sales Rank: #37016 in Books Published on: 2009-08-24 Original language: English Number of items: 1 Binding: Spiral-bound 256 pages
About the Author Kit Spencer is a makeup artist and hairstylist who works in television, movies and music videos, creating special effects for a range of clients. She is the author of two other books on hairstyles and makeup. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Introduction I have been a makeup artist for over 10 years. During this time I have worked on every combination of face shape, skin tone, and age of woman possible. It still surprises me how unconfident the majority of women feel about choosing and applying their own makeup. Makeup is not only exciting and creative, but it also has an amazingly empowering quality. It is not difficult or time-consuming to apply natural, daytime or evening makeup when you know how to do it properly. It is right to feel frustrated that you wear the same shade of lipstick day and night, whether you're shopping for groceries or going to a party. Now is the time to update your makeup techniques, give your makeup bag an overhaul, start looking at new colors, and invest in decent brushes. Makeup can make you look and feel better. Its purpose is to enhance your face and features, not disguise them. Makeup, when applied well, blends flawlessly into the skin tone. There are no hard edges, and all the features are balanced. All the individual elements -- eyes, lips, and cheeks -- work with each other. Badly applied makeup sits on the surface of the skin, looks patchy, and is aging. The key to achieving success is learning how to apply makeup properly, starting with the basics such as selecting and applying foundation, using concealer, and contouring. Once you've mastered the basics, you can achieve whatever look you desire, because you'll have the confidence to start experimenting. About This Book As a professional you must have the skills to apply makeup to anyone and everyone. As an individual, you just need the knowledge and skills to apply makeup to the one face you know the best -- your own. Through teaching and observing women doing their own makeup, I know the common pitfalls and mistakes that women encounter, and I will teach you how to avoid them, using clear step-by-step instructions and pictures of real women. This book will help you develop a makeup routine that can be easily adapted to whatever time you have available, whether it is 10 minutes in the morning or 30 minutes before a party or big event. By breaking your routine down into separate elements such as base, blush, mascara, and eye looks, you should be able to pick and choose elements to fit the time available. The more you practice, the quicker you will get. The skills required and the basic steps followed for applying natural eye makeup and a dramatic smoky eye, for example, are the same. Sometimes even the same colors are used, but the intensity of color may be different. The key to success is mastering the basic techniques and becoming competent at a few key makeup looks that work for you. If you are planning to do your own makeup on your wedding day, in the bridal section (see page 182) you will find looks to suit all skin tones and ages, as well as tips and advice on how to do makeup that will look great from a distance. This is how many of your guests and initially the groom will see you, so your makeup must work in photographs without being too much when the guests and groom are close by. Also covered in this book are tips and suggested looks for doing makeup on others such as children's face painting and costume parties, and advice on taking makeup further as a career or hobby.
Great tips but iffy makeup application I was waiting for this book to come out and while I'm not let down I'm not entirely pleased either. What I really love about this book is that its quite helpful for those looking to become makeup artists, all the tips are geared towards putting makeup on a variety of people including yourself. The book presentation is perfect, instead of being a paperback book which you might have to hold open if you want to follow along, it is a hardback spiral book that is easy to keep open. The pages are durable and easy to turn. Not that this is important but it was a nice touch. The author also used real people, not perfectly airbrushed young pro models, this made it more realistic to the reader. The book begins with tools and tips to aid you narrow down what it is you need in a makeup kit. The breakdown of tools needed was quick and to the point It still gave you all the information to allow you to get what you need not what they tell you to get. Next it goes into foundation and picking the correct shade and type for your skin, also a quick how to on skin care tips. The author really broke down the different facial shapes and how to apply blush the right way as well as how to contour the face. She also had tips of applying eyeshadow to all different eyeshapes to flatter them in the best way possible. Lips was quite basic, there wasn't too much information on it besides using lipliner and differences between day and night time lip looks. Now for the disappointing part of the book, skin color and tone. When it came to lighter skin tones, she had about 5 different types like ivory, fair, golden and caramel. What is interesting is that they were all very similar in color then suddenly it jumps to dark and there is nothing in between. A person who is the color Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, Liya Kebede, or around that area was completely left out of the book. This was saddening, it was as if that tone doesn't exist and dark simply implies anyone with a deep skin tone. She does mention that dark includes a wide range of shades but I guess she felt she didn't need to show them. Her makeup applications were at times poorly executed, the blush applied on almost every person looked spotty. The section on false eyelashes was a joke, a model had on a full set of lashes and they were crooked and not completely attached. And honestly some of the eyeshadow applications were of poor execution as well. Overall the book is good in terms of giving information for those who want to become makeup artists and to those who just want to learn to apply makeup better.

STINKS . . . in more ways than one! I've used Olay Definity Neck & Chest Daily Restoration Treatment at night for a couple of weeks, and it doesn't seem to do much of anything, except make my neck and chest feel like they've been powdered. The directions/product information are not very specific, so I am uncertain how to use this product, and what it is supposed to do. This product has a faint chemical smell which I find pretty objectionable (rare for an Olay product). It clogs pores, as well, which is not a problem I have had on my neck and chest with other moisturizers. I hoped, prior to using this product, that it would be a good moisturizer, at least, and possibly an anti-aging treatment for the neck/chest area. I haven't been as fastidious about using sunscreen on my neck and chest as I have been with facial sunscreen, and I'm starting to see some signs of aging. I received this product free of charge as part of the Amazon Vine program. To help potential buyers, I like to reveal whether I would have purchased a product, and been pleased with my purchase, if it had not been given to me. I may have purchased this product if it had not been a Vine offering, but I would have been disappointed that I had. I am throwing the bottle away, and will not, of course, purchase it again. Fair product. First let me say that when the newsletter came out, this was the only product I could order... so I did. I then gave it to a good friend who has her own business for women, doing intensive beauty treatments. She readily agreed to evaluate this and it took her 8 weeks to do a full evaluation. That said, she said that it does work... for a few hours. She added that it felt like a masque when it was on, washed off easily and the effects disappeared when it was washed off. At the end of 8 weeks there was no difference. She also stated it left a waxy feeling on her skin. So there is the opinion of this product from someone way more qualified than me to give their opinion on it. Not impressed I received this product as part of the Amazon Vine program. I selected it, not because I thought it would do wonders for my manly, hairy chest, but because my wife was very interested in it. Despite my doubts that she had room for yet another creme or lotion on her vanity, I ordered it. Here's what she had to say about it. It went on smoothly and seemed to absorb quickly. Unfortunately there was no noticable improvement, even after using the whole bottle (not at once, over time of course). Worse, it left a film on her chest that peeled up if she rubbed her fingers on her chest. That was her biggest complaint...she didn't like the feeling of something on her skin if she touched it or of something coming off her chest if she rubbed it. She had high hopes for the product but it just didn't pan out for her.

The Beauty of Color: The Ultimate Beauty Guide for Skin of Color
By Iman

Now in paperback-the beauty event of the year! Iman's full-color guide to makeup for women of every skin tone.
Amazon Sales Rank: #77798 in Books Published on: 2006-09-05 Original language: English Number of items: 1 Binding: Paperback 176 pages
From Publishers Weekly Discovered when she was a university student in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1975 by photographer Peter Beard, Iman went on to become an international supermodel. To address the needs of women of color, she launched a line of cosmetics, Iman, in 1994, and with this beautifully illustrated coffee-table book geared to black, Hispanic, Middle Eastern and Asian women, and timed to coincide with the debut of her second cosmetic line, she's poised to become the voice of beauty for this underrepresented group of women. In a conversational tone, Iman shares solutions to basic makeup and skin care quandaries (how to use blush, test foundation and choose tools) and debunks myths (dark skinned women don't need sunblock, ethnicity determines skin color). Other sections show how to "get the look" from "Ghetto Fab" to "So Fresh So Clean." Gorgeous photographs of well-known faces (Salma Hayek, Tyra Banks, Ling) with personal tidbits of advice and real women makeovers, from teens to women over 50, round out the offerings. Fun and flirty, with a confidential, insider feel, this combination of celebrity and self-improvement, capped with artistic portraits of women famous and not, indicate another success for Iman. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. About the Author Iman, the legendary supermodel and beauty icon, is the founder and CEO of IMAN Cosmetics, Fragrances & Skincare. The mother of two, she is married to David Bowie.
The splendor of diversity Most beauty books seem to rehash the same ideas or showcase looks that can be created by anyone who is somewhat familiar with makeup. This book is refreshingly different, and how! An immense amount of thought and creativity has gone into putting this book together. Iman and her team have gone into great lengths to portray a wide variety of looks on a broad spectrum of women. The makeup is so artfully done that you could come up with your own ideas by putting together components of several looks. Another plus about this book is that the author doesn't resort to a common book-bulking tactic used by many cosmetics mavens. Here you don't see layouts of bare-faced (or nearly so) women with inane captions like "look how beautiful she is with only eyeliner". I think many women look to beauty books to give us creative inspiration. If we looked good w/o any goop on our face, we'd know it by now, saved a lot of time and $$$ and not bothered with makeup books. "The Beauty of Color" really delivers the goods. Congratulations to Iman (and team!) for a job well done! Buy This Book. Instructive & Beautifully Illustrated. This book is all around wonderful. Not only are the pictures beautiful, but the book is very informative. This book is not only for women of color (African American, Latina, Asian, Indian, etc.), it is for all women. Iman instructs readers on many issues pertaining to makeup application, color palette selection, and skincare. The book instructs the reader on how to obtain certain looks with makeup. For example, she shows readers how to obtain the natural look or the glamour girl look. She even shows readers how to obtain the vampy and ghetto fabulous looks. In addition, she instructs readers on how to select the correct foundation, blush and bronzer colors based on individual skin color. Furthermore, the book also discusses skin care issues. Its instructions on skincare are not one size fits all. It gives care instructions to those with oily, dry, combination, and normal skin. It even includes instructions on how to take care skin with hyperpigmentation. The book is beautifully illustrated and contains a wealth of information on makeup. Regardless of your age, if you love makeup and want to apply it correctly, buy this book. Disappointing I was anxious to get my hands on this book and wondered if I should just buy it online without seeing it first. I'm glad I didn't, because when I checked it out at the library, I was truly disappointed. More than just make-up application, I was looking forward to seeing a variety of models that accurately displayed the world's women. The book showed models of color but not in the variety of shades that each ethnicity comes in. For example, the Asian models were shown stereotypically with light beige skin. No brown, Southeast Asian models were represented from countries such as Cambodia, Burma, Indonesia or Thailand or if there were some that did they looked lighter than most of their countrymen. The same with Latinas. Some of the models that were listed as coming from Latin American countries such as Brazil, Puerto Rico or Mexico looked nothing like the majority of Latinos from those countries. One model that supposedly was from Brazil looked like a poster girl for the Aryan nation! Blond hair, blue eyes and all! Iman simply used the same stereotypical representations of these races as other modeling agencies do: all Asian models must be light porcelain, Latina models must look white Spaniard, Native Americans/Indigenous usually aren't represented, Middle Eastern and Indian models must be medium to light. Do you not see a pattern? With the exception of models of African decent, practically all the models were "light" versions of their race. That is not reality and it certainly is not "global beauty." The book claimed to appeal to complexions from "nutmeg to cinnamon." I was infuriated when I saw a chart of models meant to represent various skin tones with the overwhelming majority looking more from olive oil to lemon zest than "nutmeg to cinnamon." If it weren't for the three drops of dark chocolate models thrown in as tokens, the chart would have been a complete lie - and it was a lie. Whether the racist modeling agency or Iman likes it or not, the majority of women (and people) in the world ARE BROWN. So why didn't Iman, who is a woman of color herself portray this reality? Why, after her graceful speeches of not categorizing women according to ethnicity and stating that each race has diversity of complexions, did she fail to display that fact? The excuse certainly isn't because she couldn't get hold of unique looking models, as Iman is an icon herself with loads of resources at her finger tips and aspiring beauties of the rejected "too exotic" class abound. Any model would consider it a privilege to work with her. Of course the one race that was accurately portrayed with an array of colors was the models of African decent, but maybe that was done right because Iman herself is African. If the Beauty of Color was done correctly at least 80% of the models should have been various shades of brown (i.e. mahogany, coffee, dark & milk chocolate, cinnamon, caramel, toffee, etc) because that is the global color. Was Iman ashamed to show this? Does she think that brown is boring? Or was she indirectly appealing to white consumers who might flip through the book? So maybe the intention was to incorporate so called "Latina" models that might be mistaken as Europeans themselves to make white customers feel included. But if that was the purpose it would defeat the whole reason for making a book for "women with skin of color" in the first place! Don't white women have enough books tailored for them with nothing but them represented on the pages? It's beauty books with genuine women of color that are lacking. Don't get me wrong, besides this mistake the book is beautiful: with gorgeous photography, detailed makeup application instructions and creative cosmetic looks. Literally speaking the book is filled with bright, vibrant colors but the Beauty of Color would've been so much more beautiful if it had been filled with women with real skin of color.

Kashuk Tools® Powder Brush
From Sonia Kashuk

Amazon Sales Rank: #109432 in Apparel & Accessories Brand: Sonia Kashuk

attractive brush that is well cut and versatile You know - sometimes I get caught up in the hype and feel like I just need to have the same makeup brushes as someone else. I get MAC envy or MUFE envy or Smashbox envy or Louise Young envy. And then I remember that there is this old fashioned trick called "shopping around" that is the great equalizer. Just about anyone who has high expectations from a makeup brush will be happily satisfied with this one. Coming in at less than half the price of the enviable big brand names, this brush has a nice handle, a solid ferrule, soft natural hair bristles that are dense enough to grab a decent amount of product. The brush is well shaped and trimmed evenly - there are no flat spots or pointy edges where there should not be. When I wash it I do not see significant shedding. These are all the things you look for in a brush. This brush has a dome shape and is large enough for face powder and bronzer but is also small enough to use for blush. Contouring and highlighting might be a stretch so this probably can't be your only facial brush. There is a nice contouring brush in the same line - it has an angled shape and shorter bristles. I also really like the dome shaped crease brush. I know this line might seem a bit expensive if you are used to drug store brands, but you will have these brushes for years. I promise. As long as you buy a quality brush and you care for it, it will last a long time. So how do you care for it? Daily you can gently sweep the brush against a paper towel or a tissue to remove powder residue. Weekly you can wash it. You don't need special brush cleaner. You can use baby shampoo and warm water. Don't get water past where the ferrule (metal part) is attached to the handle. Lay the brush on its side on a towel or over the edge of the sink to dry. Soft bristles, great brush. Really just a fantastic powder brush. I've spent much more money on brushes and I keep returning to these little Kashuk brushes...I love them.

Stick could be about 50% wider; price is good for the quality. A little goes a long way. will repurchase. Okay product, easy to use and convenient, but doesn't cover everything This is a good product for two reasons: 1. It's easy to use/ it's convenient AND 2. It's reasonably priced for a department-store quality concealer But it doesn't cover everything, (won't cover birthmarks or scars; try Dermablend concealer for that). The color choices are good. As always, Avon has choices for the darkest skin tones which many other cosmetic retailers do not. I recommend this as a good option to carry in your purse or if you have a skin shade that is hard to match.

Brush picks up too much mascara I definitely prefer the Extracils. The Cils a Cils picks up too much mascara on the brush. The mascara feels "gooey". The big round tube looks cheap to me. I will keep buying Chanel but not this particular mascara.

Dior DiorShow Iconic Mascara Noir
From Dior

best mascara ever, worth every penny Very smudge proof, holds curl all day, makes my lashes much longer and curvier. Clump free and seperates. Doesn't get much better than this The best mascara yet! A co-worker of mine recommended this product not so long ago, so I decided to try it since it looked so great on her. I have always been on the hunt for next the best mascara, and I have tried a LOT of brands over the years including Lancome (Hypnose, Definicil, L'extreme) , Clinque, Cover Girl, Loreal, Maybelline, Revlon, etc...), but none blew me away. I really like Lancome's mascaras, however there is one problem, and it's same problem I have with all the other brands - SMUDGING. At the end of the day, my areas around my eyes get smudged and darkened and I HATE IT so much. Even when I don't rub my eyes all day, the mascara still gets smudged! Well, this is where DIOR Iconic differentiates! It doesn't smudge at all unless you rub your eyes pretty hard. It still gives me the same effect as the other brands -- long, thick, no-clump, curvy lashes WITHOUT the smudging all day! I am Asian so I always need to curl my lashes for an extra lift no matter which brand I use. I find that if you warm up your curler before you use them, your curls will hold up longer and stronger. Sometimes I use the heat vent in my car or a hair dryer will do. It always works! I've got LASHES!!!! I am often guilty of forgetting to splurge on myself from time to time. I tend to skimp on things such as lipstick and mascara. But after reading these reviews and taking a good long look at my almost nonexistent lashes, I felt it was high time to remedy the situation, and am I glad I did. Best. Mascara. EVER. No smudges, no clumps, no lumps. Just gorgeous lashes out to THERE! Best investment I've made in myself in a long time.

Clinique Brush-On Cream Liner Deep Brown
From Clinique

Creamy liner brushes on deep, smoky, eye-defining colour. Long-wearing, waterproof formula. Ophthalmologist tested.

creamy dream come true This liner is a creamy dream come true. It goes on like butter. Stays on like a gel. Easy to work with, no clumping, no drying, no creasing, no fading. I'm 35. I have wrinkles. Usually eyeliner is a big feathery mess that highlights the crepey texture of my lids. Not this one. The color is a deep dark brown. I think when I first saw the color I worried that it had too much in the way of red undertones but that isn't how it goes on. If you are concerned about the color it really is just a nice dark brown. No red there. The packaging is a heavy glass with a screw top lid. It came with a small brush that works ok but I prefer the finer line I get from a thinner brush. My only complaint is...actually I can't think of anything. The price is great, packaging is great, performance is great.

Tweezerman Mini Oval Slant Polka Dot Tweezer
From Tweezerman International

Mini slant polka dot tweezer

I have tweezing OCD ( grin) and refuse to use anything else I kid you not, I have tweezers in my bathroom, purse, and at work. It makes me crazy for some reason to find a hair that needs plucking and I keep my eyebrows groomed obsessively. Many years ago I kept reading about tweezerman in beauty magazines when they first came out. Unlike other tweezers they are hand sharpened and I can attest to the fact that that apparently makes a huge difference. Where other tweezers allow the thinner or smaller hairs to slip through, tweezerman tweezers grip em all. Also if they ever get dull you can send them to the company and they will hand grind them again. However in spite of me using them for things they aren't made for like poking holes in something, they never dull I have tried other brands shaped the same and threw them out. Also, I don't like the pointed end tweezerman. I only like the slanted tip as the best grip whenever you see an article about the best beauty tools this is always the only tweezer I ever see mentioned I keep it in my purse - best tweezers EVER! These are small, so I keep them in my purse. They're not TOO small to use though. Tweezerman are the best tweezers, I just recently discovered them. They are aligned perfectly, and will pull hair EVERY time. Previous drugstore tweezers were frustrating since they hardly ever had the tips lined up! Tweezerman are the BEST, invest your money in these puppies and never buy drugstore tweezers again :) I like how these come with a little rubbery cover for the tips so they don't do any damage while in my purse. Plus they're cute. As my wife wish. She said that is the best one. I don't know anything about this kind of product, I just bought cause my wife asked for and she is very satisfied. She said that is the best.

Kat Von D True Romance Eyeshadow Palette - Ludwig

What it is:A palette of eight eyeshadow colors from tattoo-artist Kat Von D.What it does:A smoky eye adds an instant air of mystery--create your own with the True Romance Eyeshadow Palette. Designed by reality television star Kat Von D especially for Sephora, this artistic spectrum of shades brings an edgy-glam creativity to your makeup. The sleek black eyeshadowpalette is stenciled with silver roses and arrives packaged in a silk-screened black and silver box that is itself a work of art--and inspired by Kat's favorite tattoo. What else you need to know:The Ludwig palette contains the shades Lucifer (matte charcoal black), Orbi (golden green shimmer), Dimebag (metallic lime green), Clay (beige with gold glitter), Tequila (metallic cornsilk shimmer), Downtown (metallic light copper shimmer), Baroque (golden bronze shimmer), Leather (deep chocolate brown sheen), and two double-ended applicator brushes.Size: 8 x 0.05 oz

Ludwig will awake the artist within you Usually I enjoy picking eye shadow colors one by one ( especially from MAC) but I'm always a sucker for Sephora's palettes from Urban Decay, Hard Candy and now Kat Von D. For the price of two separate shadows you can get eight in a gorgeous, slim compact that is ready to go anywhere. Ludwig is Kat's name of her hairless cat, kind of funny how this neutral palette got that name but I think it adds more charm to this whole set. The quality of the shadows - very silky and creamy, honestly probably one of the most luxurious eye shadows I have ever touched. They don't stay on forever but last long enough that when I look in the mirror at night, sixteen hours later, I still see most of it on. The compact itself is matte black with silver roses, very, very cute. It's also about ¼" tall and slightly longer than an iPod, I can fit it easy in my makeup bag. The brushes included are very unusual, I haven't used them yet since I like the ones I have from Sephora and MAC but they are slim and also very slipper/silky. The colors seem harmless but are kind of unusual! Each one has a small twist, when I applied them I saw that they are engineered to be striking but still look good and not odd. Lucifer - the name is scary I know but it's a simple matte black shadow that is usually hard to find. Great for drawing eye liner lines and for adding depth to any color. This color also comes in the other Kat Von D. palette. Orbi - gorgeous army olive with a gold base, looks great in the summer with a tan. Dimebag - bright but sheer acid green, looks great with a bronze brown liner. Tequila - great for highlighting, looks like the silvery gold moon at night, bright and pearl like, shimmery but with no glitter. This color also comes in the other Kat Von D. palette. Clay - warm gold base, for a nice neutral look but with a light punch of that sweet corn color. Downtown - pale creamy copper like shade, looks beautiful on the lid - probably my favorite color in the whole palette. Baroque - smoldering bronze, for a nice sultry look if pared with pink lips and Downtown shadow as base. Leather - soft pale brown in cooler tone, looks great as a liner for a more natural look, I like how the brown is in the cool tonation, not reddish and warm like most browns. Best part about these is making up new color combinations, I like to mix and match them with my other shadows and liners from Urban Decay for striking looks. But one doesn't have to be wild to wear it, I'm not but I simply like makeup and this gives many options for diverse array of looks. It's fun! - Kasia S. I wanted to love it I really wanted to love this product, but after having used it for the last 6 months, I just can't recommend it. The colors are nice, and the packaging is beautiful. However, this is the messiest eye shadow I have ever tried. It will not stay on the brush and ends up all over your cheeks, hands, and bathroom counter. I have tried it with different types of brushes with the same result. I have now resorted to covering my face with kleenex whenever applying it. I have even tried wetting the brushes to no avail. It also does not last all day, and tends to crease. Because of all of this, it's difficult to work with. I much preferred the Urban Decay eye shadows. Great everyday palette I love the Kat Von D Palettes, the colors are pigmented and complementary. Out of the three palettes out currently this is the more wearable of them all. The browns are perfect for any skin tone, none of them look dirty on lighter tones and ashy on darker tones. They're shimmery but not overwhelmingly glittery, its appropriate for most people and their daily jobs or activities. The only matte color in the set is a matte black called Lucifer. Overall, this is definately a great buy, its not too expensive and its a great addition to your makeup collection.

Best lip stain I have ever used; last forever and doesn't dry out lips I have used a number of lip stains; Urban Decay, Liptini, and Liptini Shimmering. This is my favorite of the bunch. I bought this in the Teasing Blush color. Pros: - Teasing Blush gives your lips a very natural pink-red flushed color; not bright and artificial like Urban Decay's Greedy. - Lasts forever; seriously I put this on yesterday morning and my lips still had some color on this morning. - Lip pen; a bit easier to apply and get even than the liquids. - Moisturizing; this is the first stain I have used that doesn't completely dry out my lips - Wears off nicely; both Urban Decay and Liptini Shimmering looked patchy and balled up as they wore off. This stain wears off evenly so it looks good even as the color fades. - Cheap; I couldn't believe this lipstain works as good as it has! It is so much cheaper than others out there. - Nice smell to it. All the liptini stains smell a bit yucky; this stain smells like cherry-vanilla. - Easy to get even. I didn't have to exfoliate my lips beforehand to get a nice even look. Cons: - It is a lip pen; so I am not sure how long it will last. Still if it works this nice; I am willing to buy a new one once a month especially at $6 a pop. Overall I really, really like this stain. I usually put lip gloss over it to give it some shine. My favorite stain by far. found it when reading about a test on lip stains in Elle magazIne I am a big fan of lip stains. First, they are the longest lasting way of adding color to your lips that wont rub off...even when wiping with a napkin. Lipstick is quite outdated in comparison when you have a busy day or night and want STAYING color. Second, no smears no gunk Third, it replaced my lipliner. Because lipstains go on like a magic marker, you can easily outline your lips perfectly and then fill them in. But...I tried various brands and then read that this one, according to an Elle magazine test, lasted longer than the other pens on the market. But I don't believe all marketing til I try it. This is now my new favorite. I like this color in comparison to many other lipstains because so many are vividly bright red or pink and the cinnamon is a more subtle color. I had a few other brands and other colors but wound up with this as my "go to"...great for lining and filling in. Lasted longest...I concur. Although it's not really a negative, I think I'd grown used to the thinner longer tubes and this is thicker and shorter. Not a big deal and probably, in all honesty, it's easier to apply that way...but it doesn't fit as well in my jammed make up case so if I HAD to come up with a negative that's all I can think of. Conclusion: great color that isn't overpowering and seems to work well for many, lasts longest, simple to apply, great liner and lip color combo in one. Will Not Buy Again This is basically a lip marker. An okay idea, except it tends to apply unevenly and I could never seem to correct it to my satisfaction. Also, the marker dries out very quickly.

Cover FX #160 Cream Foundation Brush

What it is:A short, dense stippling brush. What it does: Foundation Brush #160 Natural is perfect for the application of foundation. It is ideal for building coverage without streaking. What else you need to know:The bristles are made of select 100% natural goat hair which is not dyed and therefore less prone to irritate skin. Soft, natural bristles do not permit excessive product deposition, therefore facilitating easier cream foundation application.

excellent for liquid and cream foundations I will start off by saying that I have never married myself to only one method of applying foundation. I know lots of people (especially the ones working at cosmetics counters) say that the best way to apply foundation is with a brush. I sometimes agree and sometimes do not. It really depends on the texture and coverage of the product, the texture and intended coverage to the skin, the temperature of the room, and the texture and cut of the brush. For example - with a thick cream or stick product on a cold day I will only use my fingers to apply the foundation because it won't blend properly without a bit of warmth. With a heavy coverage liquid foundation I like to use a brush at first, then my fingers to smooth out all the little streaks from the brush hairs. Gel foundations go on nicely with a sponge and a spritz of water or Mist N Fix. But if I have to choose just one brush for applying foundation it has to be this one - the #160 by Cover FX. The bristles are soft goat hair and they are dense enough to stipple or brush on the foundation, but they aren't so hard as to leave streaks like the typical foundation brush. Stippling or dotting the foundation on the skin gives a nice even coverage that is a bit heavy but good if you have a lot of blemishes or are getting ready for a night out. Brushing the foundation on tends to give a lighter bit of coverage and uses less product. For liquid foundations only, I prefer the MAC 168 brush which is really an angled cheek brush but it applies liquid foundation so nicely. For full coverage stippling I like the Sigma SS187. Lots of people like the MAC 109 (Sigma has a nice dupe of that brush too), but I prefer that brush for contouring. Using a brush will require more product than using your fingers. If your number one concern is fear of wasting foundation, don't use a brush. If you care about precision application then get a brush (or two or three). Anyway back to this brush. It is actually firm enough to work with cream foundations as well as liquid. It is also a good size to use with creamy cheek products. The shape is not good for applying concealer or using for contouring or highlighting. This is primarily for foundation. I took off a star because it does seem to shed despite the fact that I am gentle with it and do not use harsh cleansers or get the top of the ferrule wet. Speaking of washing brushes: if you are thinking about getting your first foundation brush, and you intend to use that brush every day, then you must remember you have to wash that brush every day. Getting more than one foundation brush might be a good idea. Just FYI.

Laura Mercier Smoky Eye Liner Brush
From Laura Mercier

A high quality synthetic fiber brush precisely cut with a contoured cone shape specifically designed to create the perfect smoky eye.

good but not a must have This brush performs a bit differently than I had expected. It looks like it would be soft and flexible but it's quite firm. I expected it to offer a graduated line depending on the angle of the brush to the surface but it really is only capable of a very fine line. The bristles are trimmed to a fine point so when you apply eyeliner, shadow, or pigment you'll have to reapply because the brush won't hold a lot of pigment. That's okay because this is the brush you want to use if you are lining in fine detail. I can see this being used for artistic and professional applications such as face painting or costume or effects makeup. I don't use it often but I do like it. I consider this a brush for someone who already has a good collection of quality brushes. This is not a must have. Update on 12/1/09 - the ferrule is coming off the handle. I so rarely use this brush and when I do wash it I am very careful. Despite all that the brush is falling apart. I'm downgrading to 2 stars for that.

Olay Professional Pro-X Intensive Wrinkle Protocol
From Procter and Gamble

New
Amazon Sales Rank: #10951 in Health and Beauty Brand: Olay Released on: 2009-06-22 Dimensions: .67 pounds

Not sure if it's worth the extra money compared to Olay's other lines. I purchased this kit online at Target, $10.00 off. I had been using the Olay Definity line and thought I'd give the Pro-X a chance, especially with the discount. The wrinkle smoothing cream is sticky for quite some time, at least it is on my face. But, it's smooth as butta in the morning. :) Both the wrinkle smoothing cream (nighttime) and the Daytime lotion with SPF 30 seem to improve my skin. Two age spots, on my cheek, were lightened previously with the Olay Definity line. The Pro-X line seems to have almost taken the spots out completely. I didn't think that was possible. On the downside, I had to stop using the deep wrinkle treatment. It caused redness on my crow's feet area, like a mini sunburn. I was on the Olay website and Olay called me when I mentioned the redness in an oline chat. The lady sent me a coupon good for a free Definity product, which she thought might fit my skin type better. I like the Definity line, even the smell. So, I might use both the Pro-X and Definity line, or simply go back to the cheaper Definity line. Definity seems lighter when applied. I'm pleased overall, but is it a better product than Olay's other lines? Debatable. Honestly, I wish Olay didn't have so many lines. Multiple lines drives me nuts. Regenerist, Definity, Pro-X. I just want something that works that won't empty my skin care piggy bank. Price is good, product works! So I just recently turned 30, yay... I've started noticing wrinkle lines on my forehead and tried to find an alternative to my Lancome night cream (which costs around $[...] a jar). I read a lot about this system and with such a good price I figured I'd try it. I agree with the other reviewer, the wrinkle smoothing cream is a bit sticky at first but since I wear it to sleep who cares. In the morning I do notice my skin being a lot smoother and softer. My wrinkles have lessened to a good extend. The day lotion with 30 SPF is a major plus, I hate sticky sunblock, and this one isn't sticky. It absorbs into the skin and I don't even notice I have sunblock on. The eye cream is decent. I would say it's probably the least favorite of mine, I think I'll be shopping around for a different eye cream once I'm done with this. The other two products are keepers though. I used to work in the cosmetic chemical biz and the ingredients in this outshine any product I've used Years ago I was a sales rep for cosmetical ingredients. Meaning that I worked with major companies to bid on what was in their products to sell them and learned many things about them. I worked for no cosmetic company but sold the ingredients they needed to them from a broker who supplied them in large quantities. Some things are fairly interesting...like the companies who put an inert and non-working ingredient into their products that tingle because we equate "tingling" with doing something. Or those who use cheaper ingredients that are mostly fillers. Or water as the first and primary ingredient. I learned much. At that time I was always impressed with Olay as a company because, not only did they always seem to purchase quality ingredients and not use fillers as their main ingredients, but their cosmetic scientists seemed to always put whatever was the newest research into the products before others did and at a better price. As a consumer, I just turned 43. That changes everything, doesn't it? Unfortunately! The changes...are...in my facial lines. And that makes what I put on my face even more important. Because I still read up on what's out there in the market even though I no longer work in that field, I already knew the original Regenerist and the Olay ProX actually did show better results in not only their own tests but many independant ones as well...even ones on the Today show that showed the changes in facial lines measured and photographed for a few weeks on the more expensive lotions and Olay. Google it for info. I'm sure it's all still floating around on the 'net. I don't remember all lotions it was up against but I do know it beat out La Prarie's $200 moisturizer because we worked with them. Okay, so knowing all that, I was using the regular Regenerist the most often because, as much as I knew this was the best, I felt it way overpriced when it first came out. However, it's finally gone down and price and it's now my only system. The ingredients are impressive. The tests on caffeine for wrinkles is VERY recent and extremely impressive. Two years ago, knowing about the test results of this ingredient after reading first hand the comparison I could not, for the life of me, find any skin cream that contained it. Naturally, Olay is the first. It seems when something is impressive on the market, you'd think the top dollar companies would start using it...but I've come to feel that often top dollar companies use the $100 price tags for full page ads in Vogue...because, from someone in the industry, I can say the ingredients Olay uses are better and the test results back it up. Although I like their other lines, I am one of the odd people who actually uses a cream on half my face to compare results of it when I first get it...having done that, this one helped line elimination far better. 1. sensitivity: I have VERY sensitive skin. I actually refuse antibiotics because they make my face break out like I'm having a second puberty. It seems close to everything makes my face break out. Olay products are one of the very few I can use. 2. sunblock: this is, I know, imperative at my age. However most other moisturizers have minimal sunscreen protection. An spf of 30 is almost unheard of and, in Texas that's a good thing. My doc says I need high sunscreen in my face lotion at my age...this is the highest out there. Actually, anything higher than 30 is inert anyway. 3. moisturizing: There is a noticeable difference in my opinion of just looking at my right side vs left in improvement. Now that's not scientific measurement but it's enough for me to be a believer 5. Scent:non fragranced...thank goodness. Better for your skin 6. Packaging: Because it comes in a pump, you do not contaminate your lotion with bacteria from your hands. Olay has some other products that are not in pumps and I always prefer the pump personally because of this. Far better for your face. Because of the past studies on Olay and the ingredients they use, I actually used Olay products even when I could get the ones that cost hundreds of dollars more free since I worked in the industry and samples were handed out every day. Now that I have to pay for my cosmetics and lotions I take the knowledge I gained when buying any kind of acne treatment, moisturizer etc and make my choices on that even more than price. Actions: full range...cell repair, line minimalization, anti-aging, increases exfoliation rate so you slough off dead skin and regenerate new skin faster, helping to minimize wrinkles and add youthful appearance. okay so I mentioned the Today show tests against all lotions even the 200 and 100 dollar ones still showed best results in the Prox but here are some other goodies I know of: Pro-X Age Repair Lotion SPF 30 has received Best SPF Day Lotion in Prevention magazine's 2009 Prevention Defy Your Age Beauty Awards Scientific American Magazine noted it the best cutting-edge treatment for aging you can get without going under the knife Style.com (Vogue): 24 State of the Art Products You Need to Know About Olay Pro-X Hydra Firming Cream tops the list NYC dermatologist Dr. Doris Day ranks Pro-X and Regenerist products in her Top 5 in the March issue of InStyle magazine. Total Beauty: 10 Best Beauty Breakthroughs Allure: Higher Power Is it possible to get prescription-like results from a beauty-aisle skin cream? Maybe so-we investigate the issue Encouraging Health: OTC Beauty Treatment for Skin? Experts say It's possible. Some creams, ointments and treatments actually do reduce the appearance of fine lines Butterfly Diary: Hot Skincare Launches in 2009 Olay's first foray into the professional world occurs this year with Professional Pro-X. These are doctor-strength products... NEGATIVES: This is actually the ONLY product I buy now from Proctor and Gamble, which owns Olay. I personally am against some of their recent manufacturing processes which I won't go into here or use this review to debate because, as far as the lotion goes, it's beyond reproach...personally I just wish it was made by someone else. Still, until I find a rival, I can't say the lotion is not the best

NARS Sheer Glow Foundation 1 fl oz (30 ml)
From NARS

Sheer, radiant finish with buildable coverage

Impressive I have been using this for about a month now and I love it! I am a bit of a makeup junkie and can't resist trying out different brands. What I love about this is it's ability to look glowy without looking too dewy or luminous. The subltle glow is great. You can build the coverage, plus this foundation is easy to apply and blend. It goes on light and smooth and feels like nothing. Will definitely buy again

Very smudge proof, holds curl all day, makes my lashes much longer and curvier. Clump free and seperates. Doesn't get much better than this

The best mascara yet!5

I've got LASHES!!!!5
I am often guilty of forgetting to splurge on myself from time to time. I tend to skimp on things such as lipstick and mascara. But after reading these reviews and taking a good long look at my almost nonexistent lashes, I felt it was high time to remedy the situation, and am I glad I did. Best. Mascara. EVER.

No smudges, no clumps, no lumps. Just gorgeous lashes out to THERE! Best investment I've made in myself in a long time.

Excellent cream!5
Lumene is definitely an off the beaten path product line. Finnish skincare line, I first tried it while in Russia and was pleasantly surprised with it's clean feel, light fruity smell and absolute absence of side effects such as irritation, breakouts or whiteheads that sometimes emerge after you try something new.

As for this particular cream, I can't stop ranting and raving about it. It feels rich when applied, but never ever does it cause breakouts for me, and I have skin that seems to root against me :-) A morning after the night with this retinol night cream is a morning of dewy skin, although I would definitely recommend sticking to a cream regimen instead of applying it sporadically.

All in all, I am very pleased with this cream and after looking everywhere for it, I am amazed I found it here. I am definitely buying it! Hooray! The search is over.

A Bit Pricey, But Worth Every Penny5
My lashes are thin and somewhat sparse, and I get compliments whenever I wear this. It seperates my lashes and gives them definition, excellent curl effect and length. Doesn't smudge, clump or flake.
DI gives my lashes volume without looking chunky, and also curves them to great lengths. Even though it doesn't say its waterproof, it actually is, which is good.
Good investment

in love with this shadow5
I have moonbeam and supernova and I love these shadows because I can use them wet and with the black pigments inside, i can mix it with the color and get a solid, deep color on my lid that lasts all day. The colors are so gorgeous and even though i have oily skin and it soaks up make up, it does not happen with these shadows. I even used the black pigment just as a liner for my eye and used the green for coloring the lid. The colors also have a white sort of swirl of color so you can get highlighter from it too. This one product has it all for creating beautiful eyes.

Coolest eye shadow on the PLANET (and I use that final word purposefully--pun intended)5
I've never in my life been stopped by someone to ask what shadow I have on til I got this. I only have the color "Shooting star" but it's pretty darn wonderful. It is black with swirls of gold. You might not think of using black on your eyes but if you put it just in the creases and and/or on the outer corner this is very dramatic with any other color you might be wearing and not the least bit overbearing. You can also wet the pigment and then line your eyes for a smoky eye look.

I get compliments on it because the gold flecks on black in shooting star are just dramatic. It's a keeper and makes my eyes really pop

Negative: I wish it came with an applicator or at least a place to keep an applicator. I hate having it loose in my make up bag...but I overlook this flaw outta love. (grin)

and it lasts all day.

A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients
By Ruth Winter

The fifth edition of this classic guide, first published in 1978, continues the tradition of being the most up-to-date, complete, and trusted reference for taking the guesswork out of choosing safe and effective cosmetics and toiletries.

You wouldn't eat something without knowing what it was--don't you want to take the same care with what you put on your face, hair, and body? Find out what's in that shampoo, makeup, toothpaste, lotion, or perfume here, with more than 6,000 entries, organized alphabetically. Cosmetics are barely regulated these days, leaving it up to you to learn what those strange-sounding names mean and how they might affect you. For example, did you know these intriguing tidbits?

  • Abietic acid, a texturizer in soaps, is harmless when injected into mice but causes paralysis in frogs.
  • The American Medical Association frowns on medicated makeup, because their potential to do harm often outweighs their benefit.
  • Mayonnaise is as effective a dry-hair conditioner as the expensive preparations.
  • Milk is a good face wash, but you'd better rinse it off well, or rancidity will give rise to bacteria that will cause pimples.

Don't skip the introduction, a provocative discussion of "cosmeceuticals," anti-aging products, what's really meant by the word "natural," "culture and cosmetics," and what to do if you have an adverse reaction. This is the fifth edition of this guide, which originally appeared in 1978. Even if you own the fourth edition, you'll want to update, because this edition includes 1,400 newly developed chemicals and hundreds of name changes. --Joan Price

From the Inside Flap
The fifth edition of this classic guide, first published in 1978, continues the tradition of being the most up-to-date, complete, and trusted reference for taking the guesswork out of choosing safe and effective cosmetics and toiletries.
The more than 6,000 entries include 1,400 newly developed chemicals (along with hundreds more whose names have been changed by the manufacturers since the last edition of this book was published in 1994). Virtually every chemical found in toiletries and cosmetics, from body and face creams to toothpaste, hand lotion, shaving cream, shampoo, soap, perfume, and makeup, is evaluated, including those ingredients marketed as being all natural, for children, and for people of color. The book's alphabetical arrangement makes it easy to look up the ingredients in the products you use.

With more substances than ever in products we use every day--and with the continuing deregulation of the cosmetics industry--this book is more indispensable than ever.

About the Author
Ruth Winter, M.S., is an award-winning science writer who is nationally known for her many books and for her magazine articles in Family Circle, Woman's Day, Omni, and Reader's Digest. She is also the author of A Consumer's Dictionary of Food Additives and A Consumer's Dictionary of Medicines: Prescription, Over-the-Counter, Homeopathic, and Herbal.

very informative - a must read if you have sensitive skin5
yes this book does tell you what purposes many of the ingredients have. for example, "as an emolient", "as a thickening agent", "a preservative", etc. this book is a consumer's guide, not a text book teaching you about chemistry and cosmetic formulation, so there's no need to be too technical. i have very sensitive skin that's prone to allergies. i used to waste a lot of money on cosmetics because almost everything will give me rashes. when i was tested by an allergist i was reacting to every single sensitizer i received. now i use this guide to learn about ingredients and sort through the vast inventory of beauty products to find the right one. i just bought a newly updated version as the older version did not cover all the newest ingredients.

Comprehensive and thorough5
The 6th edition of Ruth Winter's A CONSUMER'S DICTIONARY OF COSMETIC INGREDIENTS, first published in 1978, contains an excellent 40 page introduction covering everything from the state of cosmetics regulations, safety concerns, basic ingredients, and what to do if you have an adverse reaction, to an annotated list of organizations concerned with cosmetics safety. This detailed book is over 500 pages with thousands of entries of varying lengths--from a line or two to a paragraph. There are some longer entries of 2 or more pages on a key topic like sunscreen. The information covers more generic cosmetics, like cold cream or lipstick, as well as more technical ingredients and chemicals that you may find a specific products. In addition to a 3-page bibliography, there are two useful Appendices: "Common Label Warnings--Pay Attention!" and "Nail Safety."

The only book needed to find out about ingredients.5
This eye opening cosmetic ingredient dictionary is the perfect tool for checking out the ingredients in any cosmetic product. There has not been anything left out of the more than 5,000 listings. Ruth Winter has a science background and puts it to good use by telling the reader if the ingredient if allergenic, carcinogenic, or has no known toxicity. In comparison to Aubrey Hampton's "What's In Your Cosmetics?", Winter's book wins without a doubt. Hampton pays too much attention to listing information on natural ingredients and not enough of toxic ones. As a cosmetic ingredient researcher, I appreciate the convenience of having this resource at my fingertips, and you will too!
